THE SCENARIO ISN'T ALL THAT UNUSUAL: Boy sees "American Graffiti", boy likes "American Graffiti", boy likes cars & lifestyle of "American Graffiti". BUT, here's where things change: a young LARRY GROBE is "The Boy" and that movie, those cars, and that lifestyle start him on a path that changes his life forever !
VOODOO LARRY is the "changeling" from "American Graffiti" that's become one of the new breed of "old school" kustomizers. You've seen his cars in Ol' Skool Rodz, Rod & Custom, Kustoms Illustrated, and many other mags, as well as at car shows around the country.
Larry, and his wife Susan, travel hundreds of miles every year, showing some of the fantastic work that he turns out from his shop in Schaumburg, Illinois.
MY OLD FRIEND, Alan Mayes (OSR/CKD), alerted me to Larry's work a few years ago, in fact, Alan profiles Voodoo Larry in his "OLD SCHOOL CUSTOMS" book from Page 142-149. He's also in Alan's "Custom Car Ideas" book.
SO when I got to the 30th Anniversary KKOA Leadsled in Salina and saw Larry & Susan pull-into the Host Motel parking lot in that beautiful, green, "Voodoo Idol" '46 Ford I locked him into an Interview right away...so that I could share his info, expertise, and, background with all of our friends here on the HOF Legends Series.
VOODOO LARRY is a great guy, loves to talk cars, loves to mingle with the crowd. and is lots of fun to hang with.
We talked cars, sure, but I wanted to find out where his "roots" were, and how he began putting rods & kustoms together, so in this first story from our session we go back to the beginning...the early years. Enjoy ! JK
